'Volume.1' is the debut compilation album from Root Records.
We've been working behind the scenes, steadily pulling together a compilation album, featuring an array of beat-makers, producers and musicians.
The album's see's the introduction of long-time friends, DeepMatter family members and musicians we love from Simon Jefferis, Natty Reeves, Jerk & Niko Lafleur who DeepMatter fans will know of very much, to Intalekt, Shunaji, Rosemary Minkler & FR1TH, who have been friends of the label for many years.
Speaking on the album, Label Manager, Tom Pickford said:
"We started Root Records to allow further opportunity to expand the instrumental side of DeepMatter Records, it's where the label first started off; solely instrumental, but naturally as things progressed, our artists (and the label) wanted to move further into vocals and then slowly, we reduced our instrumental output. After a few years, and our schedule getting busier and busier, we realised we needed a place to make sure our instrumental Roots lived on, and that's when Root Records was born.
On this tape, we wanted to showcase that we aren't just about jazz and open up to where we see Root going, such as more beat focused like on Niko Lafleur's 'Thru The Smoke' which brings a sprinkling of classic West Coast flavour, alongside our electronic impulses that are embedded into tracks like Intalekt's 'I Stand' & Shunaji's 'Green Acid.
Other tracks from Natty Reeves, Jerk & FR1TH bring that element of DeepMatter to the tape as well, which we just couldn't leave out. And then we have the introduction of Rosemary Minkler, with 'Cat & Mouse', a keys-heavy track that just showcases the talent she possesses. I'm still not sure how I got Simon to release a beat after years of stepping away from his "beat-making". Hopefully, this tape has a little something for everyone. We're already looking forward to Vol.2!!"
